Review by Dr. Margie Maddox

As baby boomers continue to age, the diagnosis of dementia, in particular Alzheimer’s disease continues to frequently be featured in the news. Numerous studies have been implemented and a wide variety of approaches promoted to help decrease the possibility of developing this un-curable disease. Samantha Heller combines her background of being a registered nutritionist and physical fitness expert to promote a compelling approach to preventing decreased cognitive functioning in her new book: Get Smart: Samantha Heller’s Nutrition Prescription for Boosting Brain Power and Optimizing Total Body Health.

Heller provides a self-help approach to helping to keep a person’s mind sharp by being aware of the types of food eaten, especially fats and decreasing sodium consumption. Her discussions include promoting a healthy lifestyle to also increase a positive mood, more energy and positive coping skills. Easy to follow recipes are included in the text which provide the reader an opportunity actively engage in the process of incorporating food choice into helping to prevent the onset/progress of dementia and to enhance their cognitive abilities.

Throughout the book, Heller uses research and testimonials to support her approach to enhancing cognitive abilities. She discusses the inter-relationship of systemic inflammation and chronic conditions (like cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus) and their effect on cognitive functioning. As a nutritionist, there is little surprise that her approach leans heavily on familiar guidelines for good nutrition, including comments about limited alcohol and caffeine consumption. Heller rounds out her nutrition approach by including alternative approaches like Ginkgo biloba and acelyl-1-carnitive, and various mental and physical exercises; all of these have been found to also increase cognitive functioning in some subjects.

The book concludes with the idea that it is never too early and/or too late to start good brain nutrition. The reader is encouraged to practice good nutrition habits, based upon personal likes/dislikes, individual budgets, and personal lifestyles. Using this approach, Heller comments that many readers see improvement in their cognitive functioning within fourteen days. By clearly intertwining her background in nutrition and physical fitness, Heller presents a very well researched and compelling approach that she feels will help promote increased cognitive functioning to those willing to read and follow the information presented in her text.
